Maurice R. Eichenberger

Robert Eichenberger joined the Section's Digestive Surgery Research Laboratory as manager in 1998. He oversees the lab's ongoing genetic research into the cause of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer. In 2010, he accepted a second position as manager of the Price Institute of Surgical Research. The Institute is comprised of ten laboratories, including the Digestive Surgery Research Laboratory.

"I have always had an interest in basic science research, and at the Digestive Surgery Research Laboratory, our work has a direct clinical application," he says.

In addition, Eichenberger mentors research fellows, as they focus on their individual research projects. "I help refine their ideas and design experiments, as well as teach them the latest research techniques."

A Louisville native, Eichenberger earned his BA in biology in 1990 at the University of Louisville. He completed his MS in biology at UofL in 2003.

When Eichenberger is not in the lab, he serves in the U.S. Army Reserves as an information management officer for health affairs. "Between work, the Army, and my daughters, I stay pretty busy," he says.
