Susan Galandiuk, MD, FACS, FASCRS

"As a physician," says Susan Galandiuk, MD, program director, Section of Colon & Rectal Surgery, "I strive to provide my patients with the best medical care available today. As a clinical investigator, I can do more to improve the quality of life for patients, and future generations at risk of developing a disease, by enthusiastically involving medical students, residents, fellows, and fellow surgeons in research that seeks to make it preventable, more manageable, or curable."

A native of New York State, Dr. Susan Galandiuk attended medical school at Wuerzburg University in Germany. From there, she went to the Cleveland Clinic where she completed her training in general surgery, followed by a research fellowship at the University of Louisville. This was succeeded by a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the Mayo Clinic.

Since 1990, Galandiuk has been on the full-time faculty at the University of Louisville where she holds the rank of professor of surgery. In addition, she is the director of the University of Louisville's Price Institute of Surgical Research.

In 2006, the Foundation for Biomedical Research appointed her as member of their Board of Governors. The Deutsche Gemeinschaft fuer Forschung in Heidelberg, Germany, appointed her to a special grant review panel, "Colorectal Cancer: From Primary Tumor Progression Towards Metastasis," in 2009. Also in 2009, the Blizard Institute of Cell and Molecular Science, Barts & London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary, University of London, appointed Galandiuk as honorary professor of Translational Surgical Research. Her appointment extended from September 7, 2009, through September 6, 2011.

In addition, Galandiuk is president of the Society of Pelvic Surgeons and is a member of many other professional organizations, including:

  • American Association for Cancer Research
  • American Gastroenterological Association
  • American Society of Human Genetics
  • Society for Surgical Oncology
  • Society of University Surgeons.

Galandiuk also serves on many editorial boards, including "Archives of Surgery," "British Journal of Surgery," "Diseases of the Colon & Rectum," "Digestive Surgery," and "Mayo Clinic Proceedings." Galandiuk's special interests are inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer.
