Stipends, Fringe Benefits & Facilities

Because we value quality, the Department of Surgery at the University of Louisville offers its fellows generous stipends, comprehensive fringe benefits, and state-of-the-art facilities for 2014-2015.

Life Insurance Term life insurance is provided to all residents in the amount of $2000 for each $1000 of annual stipend. Accidental death and dismemberment coverage is included.
Health Insurance Single coverage and family coverage is available at group rates.
Workerís Compensation All residents are covered by workerís compensation for any injuries or illnesses incurred as a result of assigned duties.
Disability Insurance Long-term disability insurance is provided for residents free of charge. Residents have the option of converting the coverage from group to private at the end of their training as well as the option of purchasing additional coverage at very reduced rates.
Malpractice Insurance Coverage is provided either by the University of Louisville or the hospitals to which the residents are assigned. This coverage applies only to the assigned rotations that are part of the residency training.
Dental Care The Dental Clinic in the Ambulatory Care Building will provide an annual examination, including cleaning and x-rays, to residents free of charge.
Preventive Health Program Hepatitis B immunization and annual TB test are required and administered free of charge.
Medical Licensure Commonwealth of Kentucky. The Section of Colon & Rectal Surgery pays the initial licensure fee.
Vacation Residents are given 4 weeks paid vacation, which may be taken all at once or divided into two 2 week periods. At the discretion of the Program Director, an additional one week may be permitted for personal or educational leave.
Parking University of Louisville parking permits are issued to all residents. Parking expenses were rolled into stipends beginning July 2010. These permits are valid for U of L parking lots on the Health Sciences Center (HSC) campus. In addition, all affiliated hospitals provide free parking to residents when they are assigned to these hospitals.
Physician Placement Service The University of Louisville Physician Placement Services provides free assistance to residents seeking practice opportunities in Kentucky.
Library Privileges Residents have library privileges at the School of Medicine Library and at all of the affiliated hospitals. Available services include electronic literature with many on-line journals, searches, and an inter-library loan service.
Bookstore Once a year, each resident is allotted $200 for the purchase of educational books from the Medical School bookstore. Residents are eligible for a 10 percent discount on the purchase of textbooks and supplies on dates announced by the School of Medicine bookstore.
Lab Coats Three lab coats with embroidered names are provided to residents at the beginning of their training.
Athletic Tickets Residents are eligible to purchase tickets at reduced prices through the Athletics Department.
Other Benefits Additional benefits may include textbooks, professional dues, or funds for travel to educational meetings.
Library Resources The Kornhauser Health Sciences Library houses 150,000 volumes and subscribes to over 1,600 medical, sciences and health journals. Its other resources include audiovisual equipment, personal computers and software, and rare medical journals of historical significance.
Housing Most residents choose private housing and professional real estate assistance is made available to residents.
Cafeteria In additional to the cafeteria in the Commons Building, each affiliated hospital has a cafeteria. There are also several fast-food options nearby.
Recreational Activities Downtown health clubs and a modern YMCA facility are just a short walk from the HSC campus. Membership at the Norton Healthcare System Exercise Room is available at a monthly charge. A wide array of recreational facilities at U of Lís Belknap Campus may be used by residents free of charge.
