Clinical Fellow Compensation

Stipends, Fringe Benefits & Facilities

Because we value quality, the Department of Surgery at the University of Louisville offers its fellows generous stipends, comprehensive fringe benefits, and state-of-the-art facilities.

PG Level 6......$72,960
PG Level 7......$75,995
PG Level 8......$80,035

  

Professional Enhancement

Additional benefits may include textbooks, professional dues, or funds for travel to educational meetings.  Each completing resident must submit one manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal and at least one abstract for presentation at a national surgery meeting. Residents also must attend the meeting of the American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons. Expenses are paid for by the Section. Other national meeting attendance is contingent upon having a paper on the program.  


Life Insurance

Term life insurance is provided to all residents in the amount of $2000 for each $1000 of annual stipend. Accidental death and dismemberment coverage is included.

 

Health Insurance

Single coverage and family coverage is available at group rates. Insurance is effective on the first day of the month following 30 days of employment. 

 

Worker’s Compensation

All residents are covered by worker’s compensation for any injuries or illnesses incurred as a result of assigned duties.

 

Disability Insurance

Long-term disability insurance is provided for residents free of charge. Fellows have the option of converting the coverage from group to private at the end of their training as well as the option of purchasing additional coverage at very reduced rates.

 

Malpractice Insurance

Coverage is provided either by the University of Louisville or the hospitals to which the fellows are assigned. This coverage applies only to the assigned rotations that are part of the residency training.

 

Dental Care

The Dental Clinic in the Ambulatory Care Building will provide an annual examination, including cleaning and x-rays, to residents free of charge.

     

Preventive Health Program

Hepatitis B immunization and annual TB test are required and administered free of charge.

 

Vacation

Fellows are given 4 weeks paid vacation, which may be taken all at once or divided into two 2 week periods. At the discretion of the Program Director, an additional one week may be permitted for personal or educational leave.

 

Parking

All affiliated hospitals provide free parking to residents when they are assigned to these hospitals.

 

Physician Placement Service

The University of Louisville Physician Placement Services provides free assistance to fellows seeking practice opportunities in Kentucky.

 

Library Privileges

Fellows have library privileges at the School of Medicine Library and at all of the affiliated hospitals. Available services include electronic literature with many on-line journals, searches, and an inter-library loan service.

 

Lab Coats

Three lab coats with embroidered names are provided to residents at the beginning of their training.

 

Athletic Tickets

Residents are eligible to purchase tickets at reduced prices through the Athletics Department.

 

Library Resources

The Kornhauser Health Sciences Library houses 150,000 volumes and subscribes to over 1,600 medical, sciences and health journals. Its other resources include audiovisual equipment, personal computers and software, and rare medical journals of historical significance.

 

Cafeteria

Each affiliated hospital has a cafeteria. There are also several fast-food options   nearby.

 

Recreational Activities

A fitness center is open on the HSC campus 6:00 am – 9:30 pm weekdays. Downtown health clubs and a modern YMCA facility are just a short walk from the HSC campus. Membership at the Norton Healthcare System Exercise Room is available at a monthly charge. A wide array of recreational facilities at U of L’s Belknap Campus may be used by residents free of charge.
